Unearthing a Secret: Barnes Old Cemetery

Bike ride stumbles on forgotten Victorian cemetery. Explore its secrets: nature, history, and a touch of mystery.

While writing about the fascinating Magnificent Seven cemeteries of London, I remembered stumbling upon a hidden gem of the same nature – Barnes Old Cemetery.

On a pre-pandemic bike ride along the river, a chance detour through Barnes Common revealed this beautiful Victorian burial ground. Escaping the summer heat, I’d pedalled upstream to Putney Bridge before continuing to Barnes. Returning via Rock Lane, a solitary headstone peeked from the trees, sparking my curiosity. Drawn in, I discovered a forgotten cemetery, a tranquil oasis amid the common’s greenery.

Founded in 1854, this two-acre plot served as an overflow burial ground for the nearby St. Mary’s churchyard. Unlike the manicured lawns of most modern cemeteries, Barnes Old Cemetery offers a glimpse into Victorian times. Weathered headstones whisper stories of forgotten residents, some adorned with intriguing (though perhaps slightly crumbly) statues.

The cemetery’s charm lies in its unique atmosphere. Towering yews and cedars cast dappled light, creating a peaceful and slightly mysterious ambience. The local council has even described it as an “atmospheric and romantic place.” Recent work to thin out some of the trees has only enhanced this effect, making it a popular spot for local photographers. artists and filmmakers seeking inspiration.

Nature has also reclaimed its space here. Crumbling monuments stand alongside a vibrant tapestry of flora and fauna. Birdwatchers can rejoice – the cemetery is a haven for native birds like thrushes, wrens, and finches flitting amongst the headstones. Wildflowers like foxgloves and herb Robert peek out from forgotten corners, adding a touch of colour to the serene setting.

The future of Barnes Old Cemetery remains a bit of a mystery. However, there’s a growing appreciation for this peaceful space. Whether it becomes a historical site or continues to be a sanctuary for nature, one thing’s for sure: Barnes Old Cemetery’s unique charm will continue to captivate explorers like myself.

Despite my excitement and fascination coming across this abandoned cemetery unexpectedly, I bizarrely only took one photo. Luckily, while researching it further, I stumbled upon a fantastic blog post by Caroline Swan over at Flickeringlamps.com. In her post, Caroline dives deep into the cemetery’s history and shares some great photos.
